The Bard’s Tale

Mobile version of The Bard’s Tale (2004) is a great port of maybe the most humorous fantasy RPG ever made. You roam around an open world (traveling between locations works like in the first Final Fantasy game), progress through both the main story and side quests, aided by your summoned allies and accompanied by the sometimes a bit sceptic narrator.

There’s a lot of interesting characters you’ll meet along the way, both human and magical creatures. And drunks. And weirdos. A lot of weirdos. Punch Bodb in the face for me when you meet him.

To progress further you also need to get stronger. You do that by leveling up and finding or purchasing better gear as usual in this genre.

To strenghten the humorous nature of the game there’s a bunch of songs too, like this one here (the footage is from the pc version of the game).

The Bard’s Tale costs about 3€, has the original DOS Bard’s Tale trilogy included and has no ads but if you want you can use IAP to quicken your progress, but even though the IAPs are there the game does not require them and can be played the exactly same way as it’s original 2004 version for pc and ps2. Some mobile game ports are modified to encourage IAPs, like plants vs zombies, but this isn’t the case.

PROS

  • just 3€ for 20+ hours of gameplay + og BT trilogy
  • no ads and forced IAPs
  • gamepad support
  • can install required files on SD card instead of internal storage
  • 2 versions of files, 1.7 GB for weaker devices and 3 GB for stronger
  • the 3 GB files version runs even on weaker phones (snapdragon 665+)
  • almost doesn’t drain battery

CONS

  • if you preffer serious story this is probably not your ideal choice
  • the games sometimes crashes when booting (up to 3 times, the it’s ok)
